Club History

Due to the extensive growth of the Western parts of Pune, in 1984-85, Rotary Club of Poona West felt the need of new Rotary Club in it the vicinity of its territory. The then DG Kalyan Varde entrusted this work to PP Avinash Ogale. Under the Chairmanship of PP Anant Damle, a feasibility study was carried out, and pleased with the response, organizational meetings of about 35 potential members started since 24th November 1984.

Under the able guidance of PP Avinash Ogale, who became the GSR of the new club later on, the meetings became regular. A proposal was submitted to RI, and on 23rd February’ 1985, Charter was given to this new club : Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar.

Rtn. Mukund Abhyankar and Rtn. Aniruddha Kulkarni of Rotary Club of Poona West joined Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar as Charter President and Secretary respectively. The Charter presentation and installation of office bearers took place on 15th April 1985.

Since then, the club has continuously progressed in all the activities in Rotary. Some of the significant activities and achievements of our club are as under:

1.The club sponsored the Rotaract Club of Pune Shivajinagar in 1987-88.

2.The Club sponsored the Rotary Club of Pune Ganeshkhind in 1989-90.

3.The Club’s PP Mukund Abhyankar became the District Governor in 1990-91.

4.PDG Mukund Abhyankar was elected as the representative of RI District 3130 on the Council on Legislation held at Caracus, Venezuela, in January 1995.

5.PP Ramesh Bhide was elected as a member of the Nominating Committee to nominate DG for 1996-97. PP Shirish Kshirsagar was elected as member of the said committee twice in 2008-09 and 2011-12.

6.The Club has received R.I. Presidential Citation in 1992-93 to 2010-11 (Till Date)

7.The Club was holding a massive and mega project : Rotary Industrial Fair once in two years. The eighth fair in a row, was successfully held in December 2000.

8.The Club has been receiving the Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding work In Pulse Polio Immunization program every year.

9.The Club received the award for good attendance during 1997-98 from the District, and also in 2010-11.

10.The Club has been holding the Best Bulletin Competition for all the clubs in the district from 1994-95. Prize distribution takes place at the hands of the District Governors during District Conferences District Awards Ceremony every year.

11.The club has been holding “Ekankika Spardha” (One Act Play) from the year 2000-2001.

12.The club has started the project Health Lecture Series in the year 2000-01. The Project comprises of lectures by reputed medical doctors from Pune and the audience is the common man.

13.Assistant Governors from our club Deepak Shikarpur, Shirish Kshirsagar, Ujwal Marathe.

14.Rtn Deepak Shikarpur has been elected as DGN (2013-14).

15.The club has been making significant contribution to the Rotary Foundation and its all time giving upto 29.06.2012 was $ 154,631.62

16. Club has chartered its 1st RCC on 20th May 2018

HOW THE CLUB WAS FORMED ?

Tuesday, 2nd October 1984

The meeting of new club held at Hotel Poonam. PP Avinash Ogale explained Rotary to the potential members.

Monday, 15th October 1984

The Organizing group meeting held at Hotel Poonam. Dr. Mukund Abhyankar, PP Bhalba Bedekar, PP Bal Dharap and PP Avinash Ogale were present. On this day the name of our club i.e. Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar and meeting day, Monday were finalized. It was unanimously recommended that Dr. Mukund Abhyankar and Aniruddha Kulkarni both of Rotary Club of Poona West should be the President and Secretary respectively.

Monday, 5th November 1984

The meeting of the chartered members in which forms required by R.I. were filled in. This meeting was held at B.M.C.C. Hall. Our club became a provisional club.

Monday. 26th November 1984

Our first meeting at Mahatma Phule Museum (Formerly known as Lord Reay Industrial Museum) Lecture Hall. The meeting was immediately adjourned after passing condolence resolution on the death of Shri. Yashwantrao Chavan, then Dy. Prime Minister of India.

Saturday, 23rd February 1985

The Joint meeting of all the Rotary Clubs in Pune at University of Poona Lawn was held to celebrate 80th anniversary of Rotary International. On the same day, our club received the charter. Our existence as the provisional club was over.

Monday. 15th April 1985

The Charter presentation day. DG Kalyan Varde presented ‘The Charter To Dr. Mukund Abhyankar, President of Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar.

The territorial limit of Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar begins from a point on the western boundary of the Pune Municipal Corporation near Hingne Stree Shikshan Sanstha, following the left bank of the Mutha river, going straight
along the right bank of the Mula river, upto a point where the boundary of the Rotary Club of Poona North begins, turning west and passing through the railway crossing near the road upto the Mhasoba Gate Police Chowky near Agriculture College, and the passing along Ganeshkhind road upto the point it reaches Chaturshringhi and follows at the foot of the hills on the north-west and western points of the Pune Municipal Corporation limit and then turning to South straight upto the point joining the Mutha left bank. I.e. the starting point.

We share this territory with our parent club i.e. Rotary Club of Poona West, and also Rotary Club of Pune Kothrud, Rotary Club of Pune Karvenagar and Rotary Club of Pune Ganeshkhind, Rotary Club of Pune West-End, Rotary Club of Pune Metro, Rotary Club of Pune Gandhi Bhavan, Pune Sahwas, Deccan Gymkhana.
