The project under the focus area on ‘Maternal and child health’ was undertaken in Mutha about 45 Kms away from Pune city. It was about training workshop for ASHA workers who are in direct contact with pregnant mothers in rural areas. Each ASHA worker represents one village and at least about 1000 population. Low birth weight is a major problem and its prevalence in rural areas is around 35%. The aim was to train ASHAs for the important nutritional aspects which can help the mothers overcome anemia which is rampant (around 70%) in rural mothers and tell them how they can improve their diet with locally available foods. What is the nutritional requirements during different trimesters and what foods should be eaten to satisfy the requirements. benefits of green leafy vegetables which are major source of micronutrients but are hardly consumed was discussed and the live demonstration of salad from Spinach was actually performed. ASHA workers enjoyed all the recipes and promised that they will promote the importance of these nutritional tips and use of green leafy vegetables among pregnant mothers. They were also given the write up of recipes and nutritional booklets so that they can impart the knowledge to rural mothers.
