In rural areas of Maharashtra, India, there is no sufficient infrastructure for public transport. Students sometimes have to travel on foot for more than five kilometers to school. As such, students, particularly girls find it difficult to attend schools regularly. It is cumbersome and risky to walk for hours through deserted fields to school before dawn and after dusk, especially during rainy season and winters. During the difficult days of the month, it becomes physically tiresome and on other days, it sometimes is safety hazard for lonely girl traveling home. This was leading to drop in girl students in the schools in rural area. Considering this difficulty, Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar decided to provide them with the most eco friendly, No pollution, No fuel vehicle i.e. Bicycle. The club partnered with the schools in the area to identify the needy students. We started this project 4 years back with 9 bicycles. USA based NGO, UNFORGOTTEN FUNDS through crowd funding sent us funds for 100 bicycles. The handing over ceremony of 108 bicycles took place in small village, “Galandwadi” on Tuesday, 19th December. With this, we have crossed the number 0f 500 bicycles this year.
