On Saturday, 27 th July, RCP Gandhibhavan conducted a District 3131 workshop of ‘shadu mati Ganapati idol ' making as a part of ‘train the trainer’, at Boat Club. This has been their signature project for many years signifying a battle against water pollution and environment protection awareness campaign. The plaster of paris used in commercial idols does not decompose for centuries leading to destruction of marine life and also clogs the drainage system. Thus this eco-friendly Ganapati idol making project to combat water pollution. Mr. Vishwanath Lele and Mrs. Rekha Lele, the architect couple of RCP Gandhibhavan, guided the participants on the process of making idol and its painting with the help of a video film they had made. Every participant was given a half kg clay ball, a CD to be used for base and a toothpick for carving eyes etc. The club volunteers were ever ready to help. It took nearly an hour to make the small idol and the hands on experience of creativity was very exciting to all participants. Rotarian Meenatai Borate was encouraging the participants. Due to heavy rains our many Anns dropped out and so President Anjali and Ann Shilpa participated. After the fellowship they got home their Ganapati idol to be kept for drying for 10-12 days and then they will paint it with eco-friendly colors. The trained rotarians can hence now conduct Ganapati idol making for school children or in societies. This workshop will be conducted at 4 more places in the district by the host club.
